Technology FeatureFunctionalized-Nanoparticle Enabled Metal Working Fluids and Coolants

Researchers led by Dr. Hong Liang, James J. Cain ’51 Professor, J. Mike Walker ’66 Department of Mechanical Engineering, Texas A&M University, have developed a nanoparticle-enabled water-based lubricant and coolant technology to make industrial lubrication cleaner and more efficient. Modern machinery relies on lubricants and coolants to reduce friction, wear, and heat, but many traditional solutions are oil-based; this innovative technology improves performance while supporting a more environmentally friendly approach. 

In lab testing, the technology demonstrated an 84% reduction in friction and an 81% reduction in wear in water-based systems, with potential applications in metalworking, industrial cooling, automotive and mechanical systems.

This technology has broad commercial potential anywhere water-based systems require effective corrosion protection while maintaining operational efficiency and environmental responsibility. By extending equipment life, reducing maintenance costs, and improving system reliability, it offers value across multiple industries including the following:
