Texas A&M Innovation completed an exclusive license agreement with Adaptive Genetics for commercialization of a new wheat variety developed by the Texas A&M Wheat Improvement Program at Texas A&M AgriLife. The development team was led by Dr. Amir Ibrahim with contributors Dr. Jackie Rudd, Russell Sutton, Gigi Opeña, Bryan Simoneaux, Dr. Joseph Awika, Jason Baker, Shannon Baker, and Dr. Ravindra Devkota.
The new variety was tested under experimental designation ‘TX15M8024’ and the breeding team identified it as one of the top candidates during a rigorous program of selection for visual agronomic traits, disease resistance (particularly to leaf rust and stripe rust), grain yield, grain volume weight, and end-use quality attributes. It is a hard red winter wheat that has a high grain yield potential under both irrigated and dryland conditions across a wide range of environments in Texas. It is resistant to leaf, stripe, and stem rusts and to Hessian fly, and it is particularly adapted to the Texas Rolling Plains, Blacklands, South and Central Texas. ‘Amigos’ has excellent grain characteristics and good milling and bread-baking quality attributes.
Now licensed from The Texas A&M University System, Adaptive Genetics will market seed of the variety under the name ‘Amigos’. The company is currently expanding production of ‘Amigos’ in the field in order to increase seed, with anticipation of certified seed being available for purchase by producers in 2025.
