Team Member Spotlight: From Graduate Student to New Ventures
By: Kimora Butler
Texas A&M Innovation is glad to welcome Michael Sowell as a New Ventures Manager following his graduation in May 2026. His transition into this role reflects the organization’s continued commitment to cultivating talent and supporting the growth of innovation across the Texas A&M ecosystem.
Before stepping into this position, Michael served as a Graduate Market Intelligence Assistant for Texas A&M Innovation while completing his Master of Agribusiness at Texas A&M University. In that role, he contributed to technology assessments, market research, and early commercialization initiatives, gaining valuable experience that now contributes to the success of the New Ventures program.
“As a Graduate Assistant, I was able to contribute to projects and learn from the team. In this new role, I have a broader perspective on how those projects align with the office’s larger goals and long‑term growth,” Sowell shared.
Michael’s academic journey and early career roles have laid the foundation for his transition into the innovation ecosystem. After graduating from the University of Georgia in 2016 with a dual degree in International Affairs and Political Science, he began his career shaped by public service as a U.S. Senate aide, working on national defense, agricultural policy, and armed services issues, before commissioning as a Marine Corps officer. These experiences strengthened his analytical skills, broadened his perspective, and deepened his commitment to mission-driven work. In 2023, he returned to academia to pursue his Master of Agribusiness at Texas A&M University.
Through his role as a Graduate Assistant, Michael had a strong introduction to commercialization pathways and cross-team collaboration. Reflecting on the impact of that experience, he noted, “One of the biggest benefits of working as a Graduate Assistant was getting a deeper understanding of the Texas A&M innovation ecosystem and the mission of this office.” Through hands-on work in technology research, market evaluation, and opportunity identification, he gained insight that will directly support his success as a New Ventures Manager.
“My time as a Graduate Assistant gave me a strong foundation to step into a role that will allow me to take on more ownership while continuing to grow within the office,” Sowell said.
Michael was initially drawn to the office by the variety of technologies and projects our team engages with. Over time, working at the intersection of research, business, and entrepreneurship has strengthened his appreciation for how innovative ideas move toward real-world impact. As he explains, “Every technology is a little different, and each one presents a new opportunity to learn. The mentorship and experience I gained as a Graduate Assistant also played a significant role in my decision to pursue a full-time position with Texas A&M Innovation.”
Early career professionals benefit from engaging in hands-on learning and pursuing opportunities that stretch their skills and Michael’s experience exemplifies this progression.
He shares, “My hope is to help establish a well-functioning process, clear expectations, and practical resources that can support New Ventures as it continues to grow in both size and functionality. I want to help create a solid foundation that makes it easier for researchers, founders, and the office to move technologies toward commercialization.”
Texas A&M Innovation remains committed to fostering hands-on learning by equipping students with a knowledgeable support network, real-world experience, and entrepreneurial resources. This work directly supports the broader mission of The Texas A&M University System to advance research, drive economic development, and expand opportunities for communities across Texas. Michael’s recent transition illustrates how investing in students can shape career pathways for graduates to contribute immediately after completing their studies.
We congratulate Michael on this next chapter and look forward to his continued contributions to Texas A&M Innovation. To learn more about the New Ventures team and services, visit New Ventures – Texas A&M Innovation.
